Yeti Coolers: The Definitive Guide
Sometimes brands can dominate a niche that they’re the only ones that people know—regarded as the coolest and the best. There’s Google for search engines, Facebook for social networks, Amazon for online retail, the iPhone for smartphones, and Windows for your PC operating system. For coolers, now you have Yeti.
The Origin and History of Yeti
It’s not as if there weren’t any coolers before Yeti arrived on the cooler scene. After all, lots of people know about Igloo coolers. But Igloo is now like the MySpace of social networks. If you want the cooler version of Facebook, you talk about Yeti.
Yeti was founded in 2006, started up by a pair of brothers who were dissatisfied with how every cooler in the market worked. These guys used coolers while they went fishing, and they needed their coolers for their beer, for their fish, and even as platforms on which they could stand up when they made their casts.
The coolers they tried didn’t keep their beer cold for long. Sometimes the fish they caught would go bad even while in the cooler. Some of the plastic coolers would buckle under the weight when they tried to stand on them while casting. So they made their own design, partnered with Asian manufacturers to keep the costs down, and sold their coolers to other enthusiasts.
So where are Yeti coolers made nowadays? The company still has a manufacturing plant in the Philippines, and there’s one in China too. But they also now have plants in Wisconsin and Minnesota where some of the Yeti Tundra coolers are made.
In the last few years, their growth has been nothing short of amazing. In 2014, they earned $14 million in sales. That became $74 million in 2015, and then $148 million in 2016. In 2017, they totaled almost $470 million in sales.
Now it’s 2018, and they’re planning to go public with their company. Their latest projections have now let them target a market evaluation of $5 billion. All that for a company whose most famous item is a cooler, although they also sell insulated cups and other related paraphernalia.
Nowadays, the Yeti brand has become a cool brand. It’s strange when you think about it, since it’s not an inherently “cool” niche like high tech and online services, cars, or motorcycles.
Yet somehow Yeti is now considered a premium brand and their fans are called the Yetirati. The coolers are popular among the rich people of New England and among the college students in the south. Blue-collar workers still buy them, if they’re hunters (or even just for their beer). There’s even an online trend of women posting pictures of them sitting on their Yeti coolers.
It helps that it’s comparatively more expensive than any other cooler you’ve ever heard off. It’s so expensive that other brands make it a point to mention how they’re “half as expensive as a Yeti”.
But Yeti style coolers are expensive because there’s a lot of design innovations that come with each one. Without delving into long scientific explanations, all you need to do is to know that:
- It’s extremely strong, and its handles, hinges, and latches, are the same types you see on ATVs.
- It will do what it’s supposed to do, which is to keep your food fresh and your drinks cold. That’s because they use special insulation (3 inches of pressure-injected commercial grade polyurethane foam in the walls, if you’re curious). Out in ice here, and it stays ice for days at a time.
- The doors don’t just close. They seal in. The seal works like that of a freezer.
- This is the best cooler in the world, and that’s why the cheapest costs $250 at the very least (or more accurately, $249). They offer a model that can hold 83 gallons, and it costs $1,300. Hordes of hunters buy them, because they can “hold up to 3 elk”.
- You can’t find them on shops like Costco or Target. Either you buy them online, or you go to a specialty retailer like Outdoors and Academy Sports.
- They keep on getting short on merchandise, because their production isn’t meeting the demand. That’s why they want to go public. They need the investment money to rack up the production and meet the increasing demand. Consider that for the most part it’s only available in US shops, and only recently have they tried to sell to international buyers online!
